How to help
|
|
|
 |
There are many ways to help the forest, native animals, and
the project:
A
good way to start is by finding out about the threatened
species where you live. Keep them in mind when you make
decisions, and share what you learn with your family,
neighbours, and government representatives.
- Do not buy or take animals from the forest, even if you
feel sorry for them.
- If you find a baby wild animal, leave it where its
mother will find it. Don’t take it home.
- If you see a wild animal for sale, do not buy it. Even
if you mean well, if you buy a wild animal you generate
demand for that species. This contributes to illegal
trafficking of wild animals.
- If you are a teacher or a parent, motivate your children
to conserve wild animals. You can download our educational
activities and adapt them to your needs. Feel free to
contact us with questions.
- If you have a property in the Atlantic
forest, keep some forest and trees on your land. It will be
an important source of wood, shade, water, and other
resources. Trees with holes are important for some
threatened birds to build their nests. Guadua bamboo
(takuara brava or yatevo) is key for the White-bearded
Antshrike. - You have the right to be heard by your
government. Speak with local and regional representatives
and urge them to make decisions that help the environment.
-
If you are a park ranger or owner of a private reserve, find
out about the threatened species within your reserve, and
what habitat they need. Zoning of protected areas should
take into account the key places for threatened species.
-
You can help as a volunteer.
- Most of our work is done by volunteers. There are
opportunities to work in field research, in schools, and
developing outreach materials. You can write to
kristinacockle at gmail.com to find out about current
opportunities.

- If you are a researcher, consider developing a
project in San Pedro. There are many questions left to
answer, to contribute to conservation of the Atlantic forest
and a better quality of life for local people. You can
contact us for ideas.
- Sustainable farming
- Ecology
- Sociology
- Education
- Copy and improve on our ideas. There is still a lot
to do in San Pedro, and in most of South America.
-
Let us know your ideas to improve this project.
